Narrowband Passive GSM interceptor SPI-I
The system was designed for the air interception for cellular communication in GSM networks
The passive GSM interception system, designed for mass interception of GSM targets only without using active components (BTS).
The system includes 3 main units:
The receiver unit is designed on Motorola modules.
The system includes external hardware decipherer A5.1 and internal software decipherer A5.2 The system can intercept A5.1 and A5.2 encrypted communication.

The system is housed in a ruggedized small unit (25X25X12Cm) connected to the A5/1 real time decipherer either by a USB cable or wirelessly. The basic configuration supports interception of 8 full duplex sessions (intercepted by 16 receivers) from different base stations and different providers (configured by the operator). System is a quad‐band and can be tuned to any GSM frequency used in the specific area.
All intercepted sessions and related data are stored in the system data base for offline analysis and playback.
System can operate with variety of power sources such as AC supply, generator, batteries, car supply etc and by that, it can be installed and operated in many types of configurations and environments (fixed installation, remote control configuration, transportable, vehicular, manpack etc). The architecture is modular and system capacity can be increased for interception of 16, 24, 32 full duplex sessions, all supported by a single real time decipherer.

At the beginning of interception, all existing receivers dedicated to forward channels must to be tuned to the nearest-to-target-phone base stations. Depending on its environment, a mobile phone can communicate with a GSM network via one of several preferred base stations located nearby.
In a rural environment or in a small town, there may be 1–2 preferred base stations. In such a case, a GSM Interceptor with 2 forward receiver channels may be enough. But in a big city, where base stations are close to one another, a mobile phone makes its choice among 2–3 or sometimes even more base stations. Then an Interceptor with at least 3 forward receiver channels will be necessary.
In the picture above the mobile phone may choose among 4 base stations, so the Interceptor needs at least 4 forward receiver channels. If an Interceptor with 2 forward receiver channels is used in this situation, the chances of missing the call will be around 50%.
